. this is kpix 5 news. as hundreds honor the marathon bombing victims. tonight we are getting our first look at what's left of the deadly device. >> someone knows who did this. >> good evening i'm elizabeth cook. these excliesive photos from fox 5 atlanta show what remains of
11:02 pm
the boston bombs. the feds say they were made from pressure cookers packed with slap nel intended to hurt as many people as possible. investigators say they'll try to reconstruct the devices to determine who built them and why. meanwhile, tips have been pouring into the fbi. more than 2,000 so far. and while the search continues for the killer, ken has new information about the victims. he's live in boston tonight. ken. >> hi, elizabeth. we are outside children's hospital of boston right now. little bit of good news tonight. we told you last evening about 12-year-old aaron martinez. he is continuing to improve this evening. hospitals officials telling us that he has shrapnel wounds to his lower extremities. one of the wounds is quite severe, and he will require more surgery. he is going to have to stay here in boston for at least another week so he can recover. meanwhile tonight a -- a big memorial to the blast victims.
11:03 pm
it continues to grow, people coming out tonight with candles making signs flowers a quite windy night in boston, but that didn't stop people from coming sxout paying their respects to those who were injured those who have been killed. that's the sad part of this story, that several people did not survive the bomb blasts yesterday, including one eight-year-old boy in boston, and he as well as the other victims are being remembered tonight. >> what seemed to be something we watch in the distance on television has come all too close to home. >> tonight hundreds of people remembered eight-year-old martin richard. the boston boy was at the finish line with his family cheering on his father when the bombs went off. his mother and younger sister were also hurt. >> try to make a sad moment into a funny moment and used to make
11:04 pm
everybody happy again. >> yeah. >> but this he can't because he's passed away. >> the other two victims a boston university graduate student from china, and 29-year-old crystal campbell, who was at the finish line with her best friend. >> she had a heart of gold. you couldn't ask for a better daughter. >> more than 170 other people were also wounded. >> i'm alive and being so close to the blasts, you know, it could have turned out way worse. >> the injured are being treated for shrapnel wounds, pierced eardrums, lost limbs. >> some of them woke up today with no legs, and they told me that they're happy to be alive. they told me that they thought they would die as they saw the blood spilling out. >> a law enforcement official tells cbs news the bombs that exploded near the finish line were built and put in place to
11:05 pm
look like pieces of trash. >> this was a heinous and cowardly act and given what we now know about what took place the fbi is investigating it as an act of terrorism. >> the fbi is asking for leads and cell phone photos or video. at logan airport today as people were departing customs and border patrol agents asked if they had smart phones and could they download the photos railroad video before they flew away. >> someone knows who did this. >> with so much video out there with so many digital photographs and cameras elizabeth they are telling us that somebody has evidence on their cameras, somebody has some video that could break the case. another interesting part of this whole thing you haven't seen a lot of surveillance video from the city of boston from different merchants and stores
11:06 pm
in the area, cameras that hang on lamp posts throughout the city. that is because the fbi has taken all of that video and they are going over it frame by frame right now and some insiders say that could break this case with the physical evidence that they're continuing to sniff through at the crime scene tonight. reporting live from boston, ken kpix 5. back to you. >> ken, hopefully some clues will surface in the coming day. i'm curious though, what is the city like? i know it's far from business as usual, but were people returning to work today? was anything even open. >> you know, there were some places that were open, elizabeth, but that is correct they did reopen one of the blocks that had been closed by investigators late this afternoon. they opened it pretty rapidedly. they went in with street sweepers and cleaned up a lot of the debris. there are so many people now that are still out in fact,
11:07 pm
several people who actually live along boylston street there who cannot get back to their homes and for those people, it's just going to take a lot more time to get back in. >> all right. more time to rebuild. all right, ken thank you. here in the bay area, people are rallying around the injured 12-year-old boy aaron hearne. a martinez restaurant hosts a special dinner tonight to raise money to help the family with their medical bills. president obama plans to travel to boston on thursday to attend an interfaith service for the victims. meantime forensic experts are working around the clock to gather evidence. it's pain staking work. they're looking at every last shred of the two devices across the crime scene that spans blocks. this is our first look at what one of the bombs might have looked like before it went off. viewer photos sent to whdh in boston show a bag next to a mailbox in front of the crowd.
11:08 pm
after the explosion it's gone. a sharon chen tells us now these bombs, they're not very difficult to build right. >> no, they aren't, liz. at least one of the bombs was inside an appliance you may have in your kitchen but hidden in a backpack. investigators also found a circuit board they believe was used as a detonator. >> these photos give the first look at the deadly device, a mangled pressure cooker that the fbi says was laced with nails bbs and ball bearings causing devastating injuries. retired fbi agent frank doyle says it's clear the intent was maximum damage. >> you're adding the ability to injure people, kill, mame, those projectiles become just like bullets. >> sources say the bombs were hidden in black nylon backpacks housed inside pressure cookers. authorities say the pressure cooker device are popular among foreign terrorists. one chapter called make a bomb
11:09 pm
in the kitchen of your mom. seven pressure cooker bombs were used in a 2006 train attack in india, and it was one of three devices used in the failed bombing of times square in 2010. the department of homeland security warned law enforcement in 2004 and 2010 of terror attacks using pressure cookers as improvised explosive devices, but just because a pressure cooker bomb was used in boston doesn't necessarily point to overseas terrorists. and the fact that white smoke and not black smoke came from the blast suggests it was probably not a more sophisticated device usually associated with foreign terror attacks. >> generally a whiter or a gray smoke will indicate a commercial explosive because traditionally again, for the most part, all of the military explosives are petroleum based so that oil burning and detonating will create a dark gray or a black
11:10 pm
smoke. >> the fbi hasn't ruled out the possibility that the culprit is a domestic or lone wolf. instructions or equipment for the bomb can easily be found online. >> that's what's so scary. could be anybody. >> it shour could be. >> all right sharon, thank you. also tonight the fbi is investigating a poison-laced letter sent to a u.s. senator. the letter was for republican senator roger wicker of mississippi when it was intercepted by a mail facility after routine tests. missouri senator says a person who frequently writes members of congress is in custody. no word yet on that individual's name or motive. breaking news in san francisco right now. there is an intense search going on in the area around juvenile hal on wood side avenue right near the twin peaks gas station. cops are keeping pretty tight lipped but it sounds like two boys broke out of the facility
11:11 pm
about an hour ago. police have set up check points. officers are walking through the wooded areas looking for them. coming up cops say they ditched schools and killed. the teenagers just arrested in the murder of a bay area paramedic. a case of bay area sabotage, the scary way someone stopped lots of people from being able to call 911 plus the new lawsuit that makes you wonder when can parents be held responsible for what their teenagers do when they're home alone. it is mid april well into the growing season, but tonight it could get frosty in parts of the bay area. the north bay surnd a frost advisory from 3:00 to 8:00 this morning, but the 80s are coming back. find out when next.

11:14 pm
. a break in the murder of a san jose paramedic kwin boyer. we learn tonight police arrested five teenagers two of the suspects are 14, two are 15 and one is 16. police say they skipped klass on april 4th when they drove up to boyer in a stolen car in the opened hills and attempted to carjack him then police say they shot him point-blank. >> i am deeply, deeply concerned by the fact that the persons responsible for this man's murder range in the age from 14
11:15 pm
to 16 years old. that is unacceptable. >> besides murder, the teens also face robbery and carjacking charges. they could be arraigned as early as tomorrow. millions of people in santa clara county are being asked to conserve electricity. that's because someone sabotaged underground cables, and they fired a gun at a pg&e substation. joe vasquez is there. joe, this just sounds crazy. >> this is very unusual and very serious, though. you know, at&t says that's why they are now offering a $250,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. >> we have a big crime scene right now. >> the sheriff says tab tours struck above and below ground. they lifted up heavy manhole covers and cut the underground at&t fiberoptic cables. they did that in two places on monterey highway just south of
11:16 pm
san jose. that knocked out 911 systems in the area as well as some phone service for a short while. about 15 minutes later up the road gunshots rang out. the sheriff says somebody fired a high-powered rifle into pg&e's met calf substation damaging several transformers and related equipment and causing an oil leak. >> we believe that the perpetrator or perpetrators were familiar with systems. they knew where to go for the fiberoptic. they knew where the cut. they also were able to take out some very, very critical parts of the pg&e substation. >> sort of sabotage. >> it's really too early to tell. we believe it was intentional act. certainly the high-powered rifle firing at transformers was intentional. certainly the cutting of the power -- the fiberoptic cables was intentional so if you want to call that sabotage, that's what it looks like. >> sabotage, that's, you know, a big word, yes and it's a big thing, you know, that's going
11:17 pm
on, but i don't know who would do something like that. >> i think they're idiots. no excuse for it. it's just dumb. >> earlier today authorities asked folks across santa clara county, pg&e customers to conserve energy in case they needed to shut down the substation. that hasn't had to happen. they've lost no power and liz the 911 service was restored very quickly as well. >> all right. good news there's no emergencies that need to be tended to. all right, joe thank you. we learned a few hours ago that one of the most visible faces in the fight against cyber bullying has died. amanda brown passed away at her shan hose home tonight. we saw amanda last week when she was in hospice care. amanda's family says she was relent leslie cyber bullied by her e boyfriend's new girlfriend. in 2009, she try today hang hearst in the bathroom at dell mar high, but survived and was on life support for years. her mother began an anticyber

11:19 pm
the home where the assault happened. court documents say those parents left their 15-year-old daughter alone at the home for the weekend with an unlocked lick kwor cabinet knowing she had a history of throwing parties. investigators say audrie got drunk at the house party and passed out. three boys took off her shorts, wrote obscene messages on her body and sexually assaulted her. the pott family held a press conference yesterday before the media blackout. >> audrie saw people huddled around cell phones looking at pictures at school. most of the football team knew and in her opinion the whole school was talking about it. >> audrie felt embarrassed and committed suicide a week later. the saratoga high skal newspaper reported only about ten people saw the images. novn theless the boys knew audrie was vulnerable since she suffered years of bullying
